Allan Leighton
One of Britains Top Business
Leaders
TOPICS:
He
made his name at U.K. supermarket group ASDA, transforming it from a £500 million company
to one sold to US giant Wal-Mart for £6.2 billion. In 2002 he was personally appointed by
the Prime Minister Tony Blair to turn around the loss-making Royal Mail, and he has
achieved that task in only four years.
When he left his position as President and CEO of Wal-Mart Europe he
famously coined the phrase going plural as he took on non-executive positions
at a string of companies, including lastminute.com, Leeds United, TV giant British Sky
Broadcasting Group PLC and Selfridges.
Allan is currently Chairman of Royal Mail Group and BHS Ltd, Deputy
Chairman of Selfridges & Co, George Weston Ltd, and Loblaws Ltd in Canada and Non
Executive Director of TV giant British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC.
Forthright in his views, Allan has much to say about the state of business
today, about the failings of politicians, the trials and tribulations of family dynasties
(using the Weston family as the epitome of getting it right) and about businesss
relationship with the media. The result is a fascinating and provocative, 360 degree view
of what it takes to be a business leader in todays cut-throat global economy -
thought-provoking, often surprising, always insightful.
"There is only one Allan Leighton."
