PROFESSOR GARY LATHAM
Professor
Latham is a Fellow of both the American and Canadian Psychological
Associations and the International Association of Applied Psychology.
In addition to his
position at the Rotman School, Prof. Latham holds cross appointments in
the University of Toronto’s Centre for Industrial Relations, the
Department of Psychology and the Faculty of Nursing. He is one of four
people in Canada who is a Fellow of the Academy of Management, and he is
the only Canadian who is a member of the prestigious Society of
Organizational Behaviour. In November 1996, he was made a Fellow of the
Royal Society of Canada and in 1999 he was elected President of the
Canadian Psychological Association. He is the only individual to have
received both the awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology
as a Profession, in 1998, and for Distinguished Contributions to
Psychology as a Science, in 2002, from the Society for Industrial &
Organizational Psychology, Inc. (SIOP).
In 2004, he received
the Distinguished Scholar/Practitioner Award from the Academy of
Management, and the Heneman Award for Career Achievement in Human
Resource Research from the Human Resource Division of the Academy of
Management. In 2005, he received the prestigious Michael R. Losey Award
for Life-time Contribution to Research on human resources from the
Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
In 2007, he became
the first person outside the U.S to be elected President of Society for
Industrial & Organizational Psychology. In addition, he was the
recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Organizational
Behaviour Division of the Academy of Management.
In 2008, the Human
Resources Division of the Academy of Management gave him the Thomas A.
Mahoney Award for his supervision of doctoral students; and, he was the
recipient of the Harry and Miriam Levinson Award for Exceptional
Contributions to Consulting Psychology from the American Psychological
Foundation. He will receive the James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award for
2009/2010 from the Association for Psychological Science (APS). It is
the highest award conferred by APS, an international organization
dedicated to the advancement of scientific psychology.
Prof. Latham’s
research findings have set the standard for goal setting theory and
influenced an entire generation of researchers interested in employee
motivation in general, and goal setting theory in particular.
